About the role

Teacher of Philosophy & Ethics (Maternity Cover)

Main or Upper Pay Scale

Start date: February/March 2025

Hitchin Girls’ School is a high performing school, graded Outstanding by Ofsted, where we provide an exceptional experience for all of our students. We have high level provision for teaching and learning and provide the greatest level of care and support for all students and our staff. Situated in the picturesque and historic market town of Hitchin, it is conveniently located in the beautiful countryside just 25 minutes from London by train and with easy access to motorways and airports.

We are seeking a talented and passionate individual to join our team as a teacher of Philosophy & Ethics from Spring 2025. You will either be an experienced practitioner with excellent pedagogical knowledge and communication skills or have the potential to develop into such a practitioner. The ability to teach Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at all key stages is essential and experience teaching AQA GCSE and A-Level Religious Studies (or willingness to learn) would be an advantage.

The Philosophy & Ethics Department at Hitchin Girls’ School is a very special place to teach. We have a small team of full-time professionals, teaching an ambitious and fully resourced curriculum. Students at HGS have one hour a week of compulsory Philosophy and Ethics in years 7-10, and we also offer a popular GCSE and A-Level option. The department has a strong and shared ethos, aiming to help students explore different perspectives on the world around them, and come to informed and nuanced personal judgements on a wide range of contemporary issues.

We can offer you:

  • a secure, supportive environment with a full induction programme for all new staff

  • outstanding professional development and future career opportunities

  • a positive working environment within an extremely well-resourced school

  • the chance to work with exceptionally committed colleagues who have high expectations of students

  • an active focus on staff well-being, supporting staff throughout the year with various treats/initiatives

  • access to the school’s children of staff admission rule

  • a cycle to work scheme

The appointment would suit an experienced teacher or an ECT as the school provides a thorough and successful training programme.  This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who wants to join a high performing school and gain significant experience to further enhance their career.

How to Apply:

Please forward your application to Andrea Dewhurst, PA to the Headteacher, email recruitment@hgs.herts.sch.uk. The closing date for applications is Monday 4th November. We reserve the right to make appointments before the closing date, so early applications are encouraged.
