School Governor (Co-opted)

Apply for this job

About the role

Millfield First & Nursery School in Buntingford are looking for new co-opted governors to join our friendly and supportive Governing Body.

We believe Millfield is a school to be proud of; a place where children learn and enjoy doing so.  We have a dedicated, enthusiastic and committed team of staff who endeavour to provide a learning journey full of awe and wonder.  We have high expectations of our pupils, both in their learning and socially with their peers.  Our aim is that school staff, pupils and their families work effectively together and in doing so we meet the needs of all our children.

Our governors come from a range of different backgrounds with a range of skills and experiences, but all share a common interest of wanting the best possible education for the children in our school.  Governors do this by making sure:

  • Everything the school does is aligned with its vision, ethos and strategy
  • That school leaders are held to account, and
  • That the school’s finances are monitored

Our Full Governing Body meets five times a year to fulfil these functions.

Why get involved?

Develop your own skills: Volunteering on a school governing board helps you to learn and grow, plus it looks great on your CV.

Board-level experience: It's an opportunity to gain experience in a leadership role and influence strategic direction.

Build a network: You'll connect with others in your community from different occupations and backgrounds.

Community contribution: It's a chance to give something back to your local community.

Impact: You'll make a positive difference to the educational outcomes of children and young people.

What qualifications do you need?

  • All skills and experiences are wanted: You don't need to work in education - many different skills and experiences bring value to our school governing body.
  • It's open to everyone: You don't need any specific qualifications as we welcome expressions of interest from anyone in the local community.  At this time, our governing body feel we would particularly benefit from someone with legal experience or experience in Health Services.
  • Non-parents are welcome too: You don't need to have children to become a school governor.
  • Age requirement: You must be 18 or older.
  • Time commitment: You'll need to spend a few hours each month dedicated to the task.

There is information about our current governors and the governor role on our school website. https://www.millfield.herts.sch.uk/governors/

To find out more, we encourage you to contact the school and ask to speak to the Governance Professional Clerk, who will then be able to put you in touch with our Chair of Governors for an informal chat.

Please note that if you are invited to become a governor, you will be subject to pre-appointment checks, including references.  Millfield First & Nursery School is committed to safeguarding children and young people and all governors are subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
