Getting back into work after a break
Returning to work can be exciting but also overwhelming. If you're unsure where to start, here are some tips to help you feel confident in your job search.
Update your application and online profiles:
Refresh your application form with any new skills or experiences. Update your LinkedIn profile and consider adding a brief note about your career break—being open about it can show honesty and resilience.
Identify your strengths and goals:
Think about what you enjoyed most in previous roles and whether this is an opportunity to try something new. Knowing your strengths and goals will give you clarity and confidence when job hunting.
Highlight your transferable skills:
Skills gained during a career break—like time management, communication, and adaptability—are just as valuable as workplace experience. Make sure to showcase these in applications and interviews.
Refresh your skills:
The workplace may have changed, so consider free or low-cost online courses to update your knowledge. Recent training shows employers you’re proactive about learning and development. You’ll find a wide range of courses available on both: HFL Education Hub Shop and Step2Skills Home.
Reconnect with your network:
Let former colleagues, friends, and contacts know you’re job hunting—they may have opportunities or advice. If you’ve taken a break to care for children, their school or nursery could be a great place to start networking.
Consider volunteering:
Volunteering can help you gain new skills, boost confidence, and expand your network. It also fills gaps in your CV and demonstrates a proactive attitude to potential employers.
Prepare for interviews:
If it has been a while since your last interview, practice answering common questions with a friend. Be ready to discuss your career break positively. On the day of the interview – arrive early, stay calm and listen carefully before responding.
Best of luck!
