Description
The Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School is a popular 11-18 mixed Catholic comprehensive school in Stevenage, and is a member of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust. The school serves the Catholic community across north Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and as far south as Hatfield, with pupils from more than 25 different parishes. It has an excellent reputation; it is heavily oversubscribed and there are continuing interest lists for all year groups. The roll is currently approximately 1600, including 400 in the Sixth Form.
A major refurbishment of the school estate has recentley been complted with the provision of two new blocks which are open and operational. These home new teaching accommodation, a dedicated sixth-form suite, a greater number of computer rooms and improvements to the Library, Dining and Hall facilities. Following the demolition of the old teaching block the school has been landscaped and transformed. The first of the new facilities was opened by former Headteacher Mr Kelly in October 2022. The second phase of the work which includes the opening of the new main block known as the Mathew Block had its formal grand opening in January 2024 and was opened by former Headteacher Mr Mathew.
Since its foundation in 1987, the school has developed a reputation for excellent educational standards combined with unique opportunities to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. This academic success has been acknowledged by the Department for Education, who have written to the school and acknowledged its excellent performance, commenting that The Saint John Henry Newman School is one of the top 90 schools in the country on one measure and in the top 100 schools in the country on another measure.
