Description
Hillshott Infant School and Nursery is a warm and welcoming school situated in a unique building that is over 100 years old. We have a loyal, hardworking and very skilled staff who work very well as a team to ensure that all children make outstanding progress during their time at the school. We are a popular 2 form entry school with a Nursery attached to the school. Letchworth Garden City is a well established small town with a community feel and many of the parents at the school attended the school themselves as children. The school is easily accessed from major road networks and is commutable from the outskirts of Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
At Hillshott we pride ourselves on our well cared for environment. We take great care in providing stimulating displays, role play areas and displays of children's work across the whole school. Children are encouraged to become involved in deciding on topics and themes, and are very proud of their work and ideas. Our active "Friends of Hillshott" PTA raise money for trips, workshops and materials to enhance the learning we provide.
The curriculum is topic themed, with regular focus weeks on particular areas of the curriculum so that children can fully emerse themselves in an idea. All staff are encouraged to share their ideas for topics and we work together to ensure that the weeks are fun for everyone. We have a great outside area, including our own pond, wildlife area and allotment. The school also has a dedicated childrens kitchen which is used regularly.
We place a great emphasis on developing the whole child. The school funds a nurture group for children who find school life tricky. This group are supported in a purpose built nurture room. The school has a specialist speech and language base unit on site and the skills of the base staff are used to good effect to support all the learners at the school.
The children at the school are very well behaved and kind towards each other. We reward and encourage positive learning behaviours, with emphasis being put on the efforts that a child puts into their work rather than finished products. This growth mindset is encouraged in class displays and assemblies.
We encourage all members of staff to attend training and develop their skills. Dedicated subject leadership time is given to teaching staff and all classes have dedicated highly skilled teaching assistants. The school also has a dedicated SENCO and reading recovery/support teacher to provide additional guidance to staff in order to allow all children to fulfil their potential.
