About the role

We are looking to appoint a motivated, enthusiastic, and committed person to join our KS3 Team based at our centre in Hertford as a Family Support Worker, supporting pupils and their families.  

As our KS3 Family Support Worker, you will focus on providing support, counselling and mediation to families and empowering individuals to face various challenges. The position is rewarding and requires diplomacy, tact, good communication and the ability to work with different personalities.

It is a part time position (25 hours) which can be worked Mon – Fri 9.30am to 2.30pm or negotiated with our Head of Centre. 

Family support workers focus on providing support, counselling and mediation to families and empowering individuals to face various challenges. The position is rewarding and requires diplomacy, tact, good communication and the ability to work with different personalities.

A lot of our pupils are vulnerable and from disadvantaged backgrounds. You would need to:

  • Assess family needs to identify the challenges and issues they are facing.
  • Develop support/plans that will help families find solutions to the parenting and relationship challenges they face.
  • Offer practical advice to families on a wide range of issues and challenges.
  • Provide support to pupils in difficult situations (like problems with their families, social, with peers, etc).
  • Provide emotional help to families.
  • Empower individuals within families - helping them take control of their own lives and make positive decisions.
  • Provide practical help to families – parenting advice, signposting them to the relevant agency, making referrals.
  • Offer counselling to individuals – helps with problems that may affect their social, psychological, and emotional well-being, by providing a safe and confidential space for individuals to talk and share their feelings before recommending viable solutions.
  • Liaise with other healthcare and educational professionals – help with ECHP’s, CP referrals, working with social workers, other schools, psychologists, youth workers, etc.
  • Establish relationships with individual families to help better provide support, care, and aid.

You will need to hold a current valid driver’s license, as the role involves travelling to schools and meetings to support pupils and their families in their mainstream settings. Mileage will be paid to cover travel expenses. 

You will possess excellent communication and proven organisational skills and be approachable, calm, and positive. You should be a team player, who is also able to work on your own initiative.

The successful candidate will have experience as a Family Support Worker or a similar role. Experience of working with children with additional educational needs /SEND is desirable.

The position will be for 25 hours per week: Hours / Days are negotiable. This is a Term Time Only (TTO) plus 1 week appointment. (1 week awarded to attend all INSET & Twilight training) over the academic year. 

The salary range will be H6 range (dependent on experience). There are 6 scale in the H6 range. 

The actual pro-rata TTO salary will be H6.14 £15,797 to H6.19 £17,209.
